“O Lord, how manifold are your works! In wisdom have you made them all; the earth is full of your creatures.” (Psalm 104:24)
The term “manifold” can mean multiple or diverse. In the context of this psalm, we might see it both ways. Not only is the earth full (manifold) of creatures, the creatures are also diverse (manifold). I believe this psalm also reminds us that the creation of life was not a helter-skelter, hit or miss creation. The entire life creation is at once independent and co-dependent. Each form is separated from the other in many ways, and yet the existence of that form may well depend upon the existence of another.
The created life forms on earth are then a product of wisdom. They were made as they were made for a particular purpose. Non-believers would have us believe that each evolved as they found a place. Believers would teach that their existence was pre-determined to fit a need. It’s like saying bugs developed to feed fish or birds. What did the fish and birds eat before the bugs if that is the case? When you try to work that out for every species of life, it gets pretty complicated. God figured it out first and then created them. It worked perfectly from day six.
Task for Today: Enjoy the works of the Lord. Look for the wisdom in their number and diversity. Praise Him as the creator of all things. Thank Him for the beauty that surrounds you. It is a beautiful world, and its diversity is beyond the realm of accident. Don’t be fooled into thinking it or you are an accident.
