Abide in him always,

Abide is an old term and not used much in modern times. It means dwell or live. African Americans use the term stay. I think that works well with this song. Always stay in Jesus. Never leave Jesus. Take Jesus with you wherever you go.

Jesus called upon his disciple to abide in him. John 15:4 “Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself unless it abides in the vine, so neither can you unless you abide in Me.” (NASU) Jesus promises to return the action. We stay with him and he stays with us. Not much good can happen if the branch leaves the vine. Not much good will happen if we don’t stay with Jesus.

This is what John was getting at in 1 John 1:6, 7.  “If we say that we have fellowship with Him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth; 7 but if we walk in the Light as He Himself is in the Light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin.” (NASU)

Walking in the light of Jesus, staying in fellowship with Jesus is the avenue to forgiveness of sins. Staying in him always assures us of staying with him forever. Those who stay with Jesus have no fear of the future. They, rather, welcome his return and their reward for faithful walking. 1 John 2:28-29  “Now, little children, abide in Him, so that when He appears, we may have confidence and not shrink away from Him in shame at His coming.” (NASU)

Another old hymn has the words, “I cannot take one step without you.” That’s staying in Jesus always. To stay in Jesus is to walk in his footsteps. It is to walk in his love. To stay in Jesus always is to stay in his love. Look at this beautiful passage, John 15:9-10 “Just as the Father has loved Me, I have also loved you; abide in My love. If you keep My command-ments, you will abide in My love; just as I have kept My Father’s commandments and abide in His love.” (NASU)

Staying in Jesus is to stay not only in his fellowship but also to stay in his love. To live each moment of the day in the love of Jesus is a powerful thing. Are you staying in the love of Jesus?
