Isaiah
9:6 “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”
This promised child is the same as the one in chapter 7, verse 14. This revelation of future events is one of the more dominant messianic prophecies. Verse 7 makes it even plainer. The coming one was given many names in order to show what his coming would mean to the world.
Most telling is the name Everlasting Father. Somehow, the Son would also be God the Father. He would be a king who would enlarge His kingdom without war. He would be on the throne of David, who was a king of war, but He would not bring war but peace. The peace would last forever and continually grow.
God among us would be our counselor, and he would invite us to cast our burdens on Him. Mighty God would carry our cross, our burden of sin. He would be our father even as He was a Son. It is too much to grasp, but it must be believed.
Task for Today: Let God figure this message out in terms of how it works. You and I need to believe that we have been given a son-child who will be our counselor and our God. He brought ever-growing, everlasting peace. Trust in the Father and in the Son.
