Hebrews 5:13

“…for everyone who lives on milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, since he is a child.”

More of the same admonition. He states the obvious conclusion to his first statement. Those who live on a milk diet are not able to move beyond the most simple concepts and knowledge. We understand what the author is saying. We can identify the problem at every level of general education, but we don’t apply that knowledge to Bible learning. We move up in a Bible class at the same rate, we move up in general education but without the testing. At some point, we become adults, and we attend adult Bible classes, or we skip them thinking we know all we need to know and attend the worship hour only.

How did we get the idea that basic elementary knowledge is sufficient for a lifetime of Christian living? Why did we think we knew enough for ourselves but felt no need to learn enough to teach others? Shame on us as on the Hebrew readers. God has called us to teach the good news to a lost world, and we stop short of learning enough to do that in a positive, helpful way.

Task for Today: Do a quick test of your knowledge of the Scripture. Can you set down and teach someone the foundation they need to become a child of God? Pretend a friend is sitting across from you. Open your copy of the Word and teach that person. How comfortable did it feel? Do you need to be better prepared? Today is a great day to start.
