Hebrews 4:8

“For if Joshua had given them rest, God would not have spoken of another day later on.”

The rest is still available for the Hebrews readers, and thus it is available to us today. They didn’t miss it, and neither did we. It is still obtainable. The rest given by Joshua was not the final rest. We know that because of these words of David, which were written many years after Joshua led them into the land of Canaan.

Remember that this book is all about things being better. The promise is better, and so is the promise maker. Everything to do with Christ is superior to the same thing under Moses or the period of the law. The first Joshua led the people into the promised land, and God gave them rest from their enemies. The second Joshua (Jesus) offers a final and complete rest that is superior in every way.

The Greek spelling of the two names is the same, but there is a world of difference in how God uses them. Joshua gave an earthly rest, but Jesus gives a heavenly one. Jesus offers a home in heaven and an end to earthly labor and trial.

Task for Today: Will you claim a rest here or one in the hereafter? If you obey the commands of the Lord Jesus Christ, you can claim the hereafter now and enjoy it for an eternity. What is your choice? Today is the day of choice. Choose heaven.
