Hebrews 4:7

“…again he appoints a certain day, ‘Today,’ saying through David so long afterward, in the words already quoted,’ ‘Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts.’”

The Israelites were offered the rest when they stood on the banks of the Jordan overlooking the land of milk and honey. They refused to enter in because of their lack of trust in God. He had told them that He would be with them, and He would deliver the inhabitants into their hands, but they believed their eyes and not their heart. They missed their day, and the psalmist maintains that the rest remained in his day. Today appeared again in history, and the Israelites were given another opportunity. Again they failed.

The author’s point is that the second chance offered by David proves that there still remains an opportunity to enter the rest. He applies that to people of his day. It is still today. Opportunity does indeed knock twice. God has left the way into His rest open. It is still open. God wants as many as possible to enter His rest and even today calls for us to enter in. Same criteria, don’t harden our hearts through unbelief.

Task for Today: Make sure your heart is soft and pliable. Make sure your heart is open to Gods words of promise and warning. Keep your heart soft by obeying God’s commands. Yield to Him and trust Him with not only your life here but your life of eternity in the rest.
