Psalm 149:1

“Praise the Lord! Sing to the Lord a new song, his praise in the assembly of the godly!” (Psalm 149:1)

I have to smile to myself when I read this verse. Not because I find something funny about singing to God; on the contrary, I think singing to God is one of the most wonderful things a human can do. No, I smile because of the word ‘new.’ Every time I’ve seen a new song introduced into the assembly, someone is upset. Don’t like new songs they say. I love the old songs they say.

Often because of this attitude, we have trouble getting Christians to sing new songs. Old people shake their heads at the young people or turn off the radio because the song is different to them. Imagine, God in His word suggested that we sing a new song in the assembly of the saints and we are put off. No fun in that is there?

Where do new songs come from? They come from the same place old once come from; someone’s imagination fueled by their God experience.

Task for Today: Do two things. First, learn a new song of praise. Lots of them online and in books and various music sources. Second, write a new song of praise. You may think you can’t, but you can if you have experienced the goodness of the Lord in your life. Write the words even if you can’t put it into music. Then sing the new songs with all your heart making music in your heart.
