We might answer Paul’s question by naming a lot of people including Satan himself. The point Paul is making is that God is the one who decides who is saved and who isn’t. God is the one who says who is justified and who isn’t. Satan of course would like for us to believe differently. He knows we commit sin and because we do he would like to convince us that we are sinners and therefore subject to condemnation. A lot of us believe it.
In my early years I was convinced that my salvation was very precarious and one little sin could send me straight to hell. I heard a lot about how we could lose our salvation and there was much disdain for people who felt secure in theirs. Millions of believers were led to believe that God’s offer of salvation was all based on how they performed every day. You and I soon found that we made mistakes in our walk with God which meant that he was withdrawing his offer. That is totally erroneous.
First, let’s establish a fact. John 3:16 contains the fact. “God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son.” Why would God tells us that and then say he only saves those who are so good they don’t need a savior? Does that make any sense? Of course not.
Second, everything, and I mean everything about salvation is God initiated. God saves. God gives grace. God give his forgiveness. God removes our sins. God makes us holy. God makes us perfect in his sight. God grants us righteousness.
Third, that means that you and I, the sinners contribute nothing towards our salvation. Our only part is faith. We have to believe God. We have to trust God. God says that we who have been saved by the blood of Christ have no condemnation. There is no one, including Satan who can condemn us. God has already justified us. We can’t undo it. We have been give the Holy Spirit as proof that we are saved. It’s God’s way of guaranteeing our place in the resurrection to life. This is a life time warranty.
Paul goes on to say in this chapter that absolutely nothing can separate us from the love of God in Christ. Bottom line. When you came to God in faith and obeyed from the heart his command to be immersed for the forgiveness of your sins they were forgiven. What about since then. You are being cleansed every day by the blood of Jesus. No one can steal his sheep. No one can take you away. God has justified you and that is that.
Does that mean I can’t fall from Grace. Yes I can. But God won’t remove it. I have to reject it. The victory is not in my good works but in the good work of Jesus Christ on the cross.
