Make friends of God’s children:

The song recognizes the need for close contact with fellow Christians. Think of how it works. People who love football like to find friends who like football. Those who knit or sew, love to meet with others who do. We understand the principle of choosing friends who think like we do.

Once I sat at a ball game in the middle of the opposing team’s fans. Not very enjoyable. We saw nothing eye to eye. Certainly not the best way to watch a ball game. You get the point. Like minds get together so that they can share their common interest.

The fastest way to lose your faith is to spend a lot of time with unbelievers. The fastest way to grow your faith is to spend a lot of time with believers. Walking in darkness will not improve your ability to walk in the light. It will improve your ability to walk in the dark. John tells us to walk in the light as he (Jesus) is in the light. The result is fellowship. Many fold fellowship. First, there is fellowship with each other which is a faith building exercise. Second, there is fellowship with Christ and God which is a soul saving exercise.

Do you know what evil companions produce? Answer: evil companions. Spend time with people who profane the name of God and you will soon find yourself doing the same. Join the smutty joke telling crowd and you will come away telling smutty jokes. There is enough evil in a day without inviting it. How does one avoid it? Make friends of God’s children. That friendship will lead to prayer. That friendship will lead to bible reading. That friendship will lead to worship. That friendship will lead to a stronger faith and a truer walk.

Who are your friends?
