Day-Break (Philip Dampier)
Large purple-gray clouds lay heavily upon the horizon
As if their weight could delay the new born sun.
The sky, not quite sure if it is yet the dawning light
Holds, like pearls on gray velvet, the last stars of night.
Coppery lights strike the edges of clouds floating free,
Silhouetting as sleeping giants, the stark winter trees.
The clouds, like the power of darkness, want to stay,
Keeping us without light, fighting the yawing day.
The sun, undaunted, pushes light into the reluctant sky,
Turning the gray, blue, and forcing the long night to die.
