Comments on James

Chapter 4, Verse 1 “What causes quarrels and what causes fights among you? Is it not this, that your passions are at war within you?”

The gentleness brought about by the wisdom from above is now contrasted by the results of earthly, demonic wisdom. James asks the obvious question. They and we know the answer. How easy to compare the two kinds of results of wisdom choice. Peace or turmoil. Reasonable or demanding. Extended mercy, or harsh judgment. Order in our life, total disorder and disaster.

Earthly wisdom, coming as it does from the demonic realm, brings only internal war. Not only can there be no peace among men there can be no real peace within. When we have no peace within we have no basis for peace without. The peace of Jesus is first, internal, and because it brings internal peace, external peace is possible. James has reminded us that peacemakers produce a harvest of peace. Can we do that if we are at war with ourselves?

Task for Today: Ask this question and give an honest answer. “Am I at peace within?” If you are, then you are leaving a trail of peace wherever you go. Cherish the wisdom from above and cultivate it at every opportunity. Surround yourself with heavenly wisdom people. Stay away from the wisdom of the world. Make that judgment about the things you read, view, listen to. If it doesn’t contribute to good fruits, stay away.
