Comments on James

Chapter 2, Verse 2-4 “For if a man wearing a gold ring and fine clothing comes into your assembly, and a poor man in shabby clothing also comes in, and if you pay attention to the one who wears the fine clothing and say, “You sit here in a good place,” while you say to the poor man, “You stand over there,” or, “Sit down at my feet,” have you not then made distinctions among yourselves and become judges with evil thoughts?”

James gives us an example from his time and culture that is easy to transpose into ours. There are a lot of ways besides this one to judge a person based on outward information but this one will do.

Which is worse the distinctions that we make about others based on externals or the evil thoughts that prompt such judgment? The church has one common denominator, new life in Christ. This means that all born again believers have the same spiritual DNA that make their life in Christ. There are no distinctions among purified believers, not even obvious ones like gender or race.

Task for Today: Again, I encourage us to check our behavior. This is a time for real honesty because this is an important consideration for us in the body of Christ. Can I remind myself that when I look at another Christian I am looking a my own image in Christ?
