Zechariah 8:16, 17 “These are the things that you shall do: Speak the truth to one another; render in your gates judgments that are true and make for peace; do not devise evil in your hearts against one another, and love no false oath, for all these things I hate, declares the LORD.”
There was the Law and there was the understanding of what the law meant. The Israelites understood the first part but not the last. They could quote the letter of the law but they would not live the spirit of the law. When God comes to talk to them about rehabilitation to their land He does not have the prophet quote the Ten Commandments but instead points out how they should live the law. It is a consistent message in all the prophets’ words. Just and righteous living are what God wanted. A change of hearts is what God was seeking.
Even today, people want to look at the letter of the law and not its real intent. Loving God with all your heart, mind, and soul and other people as yourself is the summation of the law. Obeying the commands is very important because God demands obedience. But obeying the intent of the commands is also very important. It’s a case of honoring God with lips but not heart. God wants both. Obey the commands and live the command’s intent.
Task for Today: Rather than counting the commands you have kept count the intents of those commands you are living by. Give not only your hands and feet to God but also your heart. Most important, give your heart. If you do that the hands and feet will follow. Where is your heart today?
