Amos 9:2 “If they dig into Sheol, from there shall my hand take them; if they climb up to heaven from there I will bring them down.”
This verse comes in the middle of God’s declaration of the destruction of Israel. The prophet has been predicting a day of bitter mourning, the end of Israel. As we have noted previously, God’s patience is not eternal. For those who think that in the end God will change His mind and rescue them in spite of their sins this would be a good book to read. There will be no escape from the vengeance of God. There will be nowhere to hide from His wrath. The end of Israel could very will serve as a warning for the last days facing us.
Top of mountain or bottom of the sea, there is no escape. God is everywhere and just like His grace finds all men so will His wrath find those that flee the grace. This passage ends in verse four with these words, “…I will fix my eyes upon them for evil and not for good.” Compare this with the promise in Jeremiah where God has good plans for the faithful. There is no escape from the hands of an angry God.
Task for Today: Whether in Amos or Revelation, the wrath of God is something to be avoided. God offers you blessings or curses. Today you choose for yourself. God will not choose for you. Rather than hide from God, why not run into His loving arms. Everyone has that choice. Looking back, what’s been yours?
