Comments on Verses from Prophets

Joel 2:13 ”…Return to the LORD your God, for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love; and he relents over disaster.”

Considering all the dire things predicted against the people we might wonder why they would want to rend their hearts and return. Joel explains why returning is not only desired but is very worthwhile. Today, we are familiar with the story of the son who took his inheritance and left home only to windup feeding pigs. Not only are we familiar with the son’s behavior but we know about his return. He was afraid of what might happen but he did not need to be. The father was so happy to have him home all the former behavior was forgiven.

So God is described by Joel. God relents. God forgives. He does these things because He is a gracious and merciful God who abounds in love. His love is unwavering and His forgiveness is sure. God’s constant call to His people is ‘Return!’ Have you left God? Wandered off or turned your back? It’s not too late to turn around like the lost son and go back to the father.

Task for Today: Linger no longer. Today is the day to come back to the God who loves you. He will tenderly bring you back into His arms. He will forgive you of your transgressions. He will reinstate you to your former place. If you have never given yourself to Him, today is the day you should do that. It is dangerous to postpone your salvation. Come, come today.
