Daniel 7:9 “As I looked, thrones were placed, and the Ancient of Days took his seat; his clothing was white as snow, and the hair of his head like pure wool; his throne was fiery flames; its wheels were burning fire. A stream of fire issued and came out from before him; a thousand thousands served him, and ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him; the court sat in judgment, and the books were opened.”
Who is Daniel’s Ancient of Days? It is generally agreed that in the three verses in this chapter, God the Creator is implied. Certainly we recognize the concept of the triune God and also that Jesus will fit the roll of the one to come and take the throne of the Ancient of Days. Both the Psalms and Isaiah suggests that God is from the beginning and before the beginning. Daniel has been leading up to the end times, to judgment. God’s rule is complete and over all other rule and His power is demonstrated by the number of servants who are before God to worship and to do His will.
The books were opened. These are the books of judgment as the scene is now a court room. The throne on which the Ancient of Days takes His seat is the judgment seat. The prophets all talk about the judgment to come. The nations around Israel as well as Israel will be judged but we see a wider scene here. Verses 13 and 14 show us that this judgment is passed to the one like a son of man, Jesus, and we know that Jesus will judge the world on the last day.
Many kingdoms will rise and fall throughout history but the kingdom of Jesus will not be destroyed but will be everlasting rule extending into eternity. The history of the world is a movement towards the moment when the saints would possess the kingdom without end. Forget the kingdoms of old and forget the kingdoms of today. All will eventually end. Only those in the kingdom of Jesus will survive.
Task for Today: Remind yourself that God is in charge of history and its outcome. Your nation or kingdom will eventually come to an end so make sure you are in the Kingdom of God. That kingdom will never end and will never lose a battle. Those in the kingdom will be able to live with God forever. Come to the kingdom if you are not yet a member. Make Jesus your king.
