Comments on Verses from Prophets

Jeremiah 23:24 “‘Can a man hide himself in secret places so that I cannot see him?’ declares the LORD. ‘Do I not fill heaven and earth?’ declares the LORD.”

Here is a sobering thought. The question might be asked about the darkness as well. Men hide from other men successfully and thus think they can hide what they do from God. The prophet makes it plain that men cannot do that. Nothing is hidden from God, not even our deepest kept heart secrets. God sees through all our camouflage and efforts to hide the truth. Sometimes we are successful in hiding the truth from ourselves but not from God.

What does God mean when He says He fills heaven and earth? This is the known and unknown universe, and God occupies every square inch. How does He do that? We don’t know, but He says He does, and so it has to be true. Where can you go to escape His eyes? Even the grave will not shield you from His eyes. No thought of man escapes His attention, neither does any intent. It is sometimes hard for us to be honest with others and with ourselves, but we are honest with God because we can’t successfully lie to Him.

Task for Today: You might as well own up to the truth about yourself today because you can’t keep the actual facts a secret from God. This is why repentance is so important. Repentance is your honest recognition of your wrongdoing. You don’t have to confess sin for God’s knowledge but for your own. Saying, “I’ve sinned,” won’t get it either, and you and I know why.
