Comments on Verses from Prophets

Jeremiah 14:22 “Are there any among the false gods of the nations that can bring rain? Or can the heavens give showers? Are you not he, O LORD our God? We set our hope on you, for you do all these things.”

Jeremiah laments the foolishness of idolatry, knowing that it is bringing Judah as it did Israel to the edge of disaster. There is no difference in the results of idolatry today. None of the things men worship today can bring rain or showers or any other needed thing. Our nation and much of the world ignore the true God of heaven for the gods of wood, silver, and gold. Like these nations of old, the modern world believes it doesn’t need God, and the more they turn away, the worse the situation among men becomes.

All around us, we see the failure of the men of our age and their gods to bring peace and prosperity. This current idolatry produces violence, hatred, injustice, greed, and ultimately war. Our only hope is a return to the God of creation. We must set our hope on Him because He and He alone can do all these things. There is no peace without God, and until there is repentance, God will not hear the nations’ cry.

Task for Today: Stay away from false gods. Do not allow yourself to be caught up in the idolatry of this current age. Partake of the world at your own risk knowing it will bring disaster. There is no hope beyond God. Today, put the world behind you and place your hope in God. It is a matter of life and death.
