Comments on Verses from Prophets

Jeremiah 10:23 “I know, O LORD, that the way of man is not in himself, that it is not in man who walks to direct his steps.”

This declaration of Jeremiah strikes at the very ego of mankind. We don’t want to hear such talk because we are filled with our own self-worth. “There is nothing we can’t accomplish,” we say. In spite of all the evidence we have seen in the Bible, we still think we are in charge of our own affairs and know exactly what we are going to do. We know so little but brag so much. Mankind thinks they are in control of everything, and they are in control of nothing.

James reminds us that we don’t know what tomorrow brings, and we should be saying if God permits about all we plan. But there is more than just planning involved here. The big story is that man doesn’t know what is right, what is correct. Mankind makes poor choices because they lack knowledge and wisdom in the realm of right and wrong. Remember God’s comment before He sent the flood? The thoughts and intents of man’s heart are evil…continually. Let’s face it, as far as understanding, we are blind men, and if we try to lead each other, we are the blind leading the blind.

Task for Today: Accept the fact that you don’t know the future, and without God’s help, you are unlikely to make good choices. Turn your life over to God, who can and will direct you into the correct paths and put your feet on the right course.
