“…and to the assembly of the firstborn who are enrolled in heaven, and to God, the judge of all, and to the spirits of the righteous made perfect.”
Where have Christians come? To Mount Zion, the city of God, the heavenly Jerusalem, a host of angels, and to the church whose names are written on the Lamb’s book of life. They have come to God and to those who have preceded them in death. The Hebrew Christians wanted to turn their backs on that and go back to their former life under the law and in an earthly temple. Just think a minute about the contrast the writer is giving the Hebrew Christians. Why go back when what is ahead is so wonderful.
Not new for some people, however. Even while heading for the promised land, the people wanted to return to Egypt. Now their descendants want to go back to the law and earthly places of worship. Why settle for Egypt and bondage when you could be free in the promised land? Why settle for a law you could not keep when you could be under a covenant that promised forgiveness and reward?
Task for Today: Today, put your lot in with those who are enrolled in heaven. Their destination is the throne of God and the heavenly Jerusalem. Do not long for a thousand years on earth when you can have eternity in heaven with God. Why seek a throne in Palestine when you can have one in heaven? You really have only a choice between a destroyed earth or a heavenly home. Which are you choosing?
