“Therefore he is the mediator of a new covenant, so that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance, since a death has occurred that redeems them from the transgressions committed under the first covenant.”
Right away we are reminded that sins committed under the Old Covenant were not completely (eternally) removed as an obstacle to the eternal inheritance. Every part of that covenant failed in respect to eternal redemption. It had to be changed. A better sacrifice than bulls and goats was required. A different priesthood was needed to present the new sacrifice; one that only needed one trip to the most holy place. To get a new priesthood the Law that provided the priesthood had to be replaced. This was God’s plan from the very beginning and was often spoken of by writers and prophets of the books contained in the Old Covenant.
God gave a New Covenant and mediated it through the death of Jesus, His only begotten Son. All covenants given in this way needed blood to ratify them. God used the blood of His own Son to show that the New Covenant was in effect.
Points of the verse: Jesus mediated a new covenant through His blood. This allowed all who would answer His call to redemption the eternal inheritance. This was because the death of Jesus on the cross paid their sin debt once and forever.
Task for Today: Rejoice that all these points are in your favor. Today is a good day to answer the call of Jesus, don’t you think. God wants all to be saved but the saved are those who answer God’s call through His Son. Have you been washed in the blood?
