“…not like the covenant that I made with their fathers on the day when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt. For they did not continue in my covenant, and so I showed no concern for them, declares the Lord.”
What do we learn here? Several things. First, the new covenant is not going to be like the old covenant. Later we will learn how that is so. We will see up close what is so different about the new covenant and why God favors it over the old. Second, we learn that God saw His action in removing the people from Egypt and taking them under His wing as an action of the covenant. We also notice in that regard that the very first thing that happened was that God required an act of obedience for them to go out and come in.
Third, we learn why the covenant was ended. It was not ended because of a failure on God’s part. Every single promise made in that covenant was kept by God and every single requirement was violated by the fathers. Because they refused to keep the covenant, God dismissed it. That is the way God has always operated. That is how God operates today.
Task for Today: Learn an important lesson here. God is not obligated to covenant breakers. God will not break the covenant but He will not have concern for those who do.
