“For he finds fault with them when he says: ‘Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will establish a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah.”
It is God who is finding fault with His people. They are at fault because they did not keep the covenant He had made with them when He took them out of Egypt. When God initiated the movement out of slavery He instituted the feast of the Passover which was the precursor of the covenant He was operating from. Later they would receive the entire covenant in written form. This review of the promise of a new covenant is quoted here from Jeremiah chapter 31.
Even though the Jews knew about this promise in Jeremiah they were not receptive when the last prophet came and presented the actual presentation of the new covenant. They were satisfied with the old covenant even though God was not. This is indicative of how out of touch men can get with God. The Jews of Jesus’ day were not the first to resist the words of God as taught by the prophets. In spite of warning after warning the first covenant people rejected the right of God to be supreme.
The new covenant promised was different than the old covenant. This writer is making a solid effort to explain all the ways it is not only different but superior.
Task for Today: Prepare yourself to receive the new covenant. Open your heart because that is where the covenant has to go. If your heart is closed you cannot be a part of the new covenant.
