“While they still could not believe it because of their joy and amazement, He said to them, ‘Have you anything here to eat?’ They gave Him a piece of a broiled fish; and He took it and ate it before them.” (Luke 24:41-43)
Interesting tidbit of information in these three verses. We could spend some time and space wondering what kind of fish this was or why Jesus was hungry but if we did we would miss the point. Did you notice the timing of this request? While is the keyword. The disciples were still in a state of unbelief. Seeing a dead person standing and talking to you could be disconcerting.
Jesus had shown them his wounds. They knew about the wounds, Thomas’s comments tell us that. They saw and they touched but it was too much. Joy, amazement, and incredibility were hindering them. They believed in spirits and they are struggling with the idea that this is a spirit, not a real live Jesus.
Jesus knew that spirits don’t eat. He asked for something to eat. Could have been anything but they had fish. Leftover from their own lunch probably. They gave him a piece, not a meal. He wasn’t starved, He just wanted to prove He was a flesh and blood resurrected Jesus.
Later the disciples who went fishing again found Jesus by the edge of the lake. They had been unsuccessful in their fishing attempt. Jesus called out to them saying “You don’t have any fish, do you?” “No” was the reply. Try the other side was the instruction. They found more fish than they could catch. They went to the bank and there was Jesus with a fire and freshly caught fish. Jesus had no boat or net. He fed them fish and bread. They did not ask where did this come from for now they knew it was their Lord.
Task for Today: Believe that Jesus is real, that He has risen and that He is your savior. Thank Him for your food especially the spiritual food. Don’t forget to eat.
David told Me. Grace is in the hospital, what a shock since I had just enjoyed lunch with you guys the day before. Hate that I found this out through another person. Hope she is doing ok. Tell her hi for me.
