“It is to your advantage…”

Most of us like having an advantage whether it’s in a game of tennis or arm wrestling. I mean, who wants to be at a disadvantage in anything? So, we can agree that these are good words if spoken to us. I’m happy to report that they can very easily apply to us. The advantage, you see, comes from being a brother of Jesus. These words were spoken to those who followed him shortly before he left them.

Jesus had told them that he was going away, leaving them to be with his father in heaven. They had come to love him so much that the thought of him leaving them was unbearable. They immediately became sorrowful all the way to their hearts. Jesus offered them comfort by saying these words.

How is it an advantage to lose the presence of Jesus? This is what he said, “…for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you, but if I go, I will send him to you.” (John 16:6)

What advantage does the Helper give us?

The Helper, the Holy Spirit will live inside us. God, in the form of the Holy Spirit, will make his abode in the disciple of Jesus. In times of trouble, he will be right there with us. He will help us understand the word. He will testify to the truth. The world will have none of these things because the Helper will convict the world of its sin and the coming judgment. He will remind us that the ruler of this world has been defeated.

Want a sure advantage over the rest of the world? Become a follower of the Christ. Obey him as your Lord. The Holy Spirit will enter your heart and become your guarantee that you belong to God. Ultimately, that advantage will lead you to heaven.
