Chapter 4, Verse 5 “Or do you suppose it is to no purpose that the Scripture says, “He yearns jealously over the spirit that he has made to dwell in us”?

The point made in verse 5 is a follow up to the one made in verse 4. God has chosen to dwell in us through the Holy Spirit. God is jealous of that relationship and doesn’t choose to share it with the world. From God’s point of view, to bring someone else (the world) into the relationship is the same as committing adultery would be for a married person. God has never settled for mediocrity in His relationship with mankind. God gives one hundred percent and expects that in return. There is no two-masters clause in God’s new covenant. All or nothing is what God demands.

Task for Today: Is the Holy Spirit in you? If so, are you trying to share your heart with Him and the world? Oh how we humans like to have the best of the two worlds. Enough of God to see us through but just enough of the world to make it more appealing to the flesh. What is going on in your inner being? Any of this world in there? Purge it out, because God is a jealous God and will not allow you to halt or vacillate between two worlds.
