Comments on Verses from Prophets

Zephaniah 2:3 “Seek the Lord, all you humble of the land, who do his just commands; seek righteousness; seek humility; perhaps you may be hidden on the day of the anger of the LORD.”

This is the lowest of expectations from a prophet. Things are so bad that the prophet has doubts that God will relent even for humble obedient servants. Even so, this is good advice in a world that opposes God. Were the prophet speaking to Christians in this day and age he could provide no better advice. Seek righteousness. Seek God’s righteousness. Seek humility. Humble yourself in the presence of God through your faith and obedience.

God’s commands are just. All of them. He is always right and always does right. Obeying His commands brings His blessings and yes, on the final day, the day of God’s anger, those who have obeyed will be hidden from the wrath. Zephaniah has little positive to say but he stuck this note in the middle of destruction. God always provides a way to safety for His faithful followers. Regardless to the extent of the calamity disobedience brings on a people, the faithful find a reprieve.

Task for Today: Easy one, right? Close your eyes to the destruction going on around you and humble yourself in the presence of God. Don’t get caught up in the evil of the day. Do His just commands. Spend your days seeking His righteousness. It is the key to salvation on the last day.
