Amos 3:6 “Is a trumpet blown in a city, and the people are not afraid? Does disaster come to a city unless the LORD has done it?”
The trumpet, like our sirens, was a sign of danger. It was used to warn the citizens of an possible attack. We have signals for natural disasters in our county and when the siren blows we think tornado and yes, we are afraid. We know what tornados can do. Ancient cities knew the danger of marauding bands of outlaws and the chance of attack by another nation. Here is another in a list of truisms. It is the prophet’s way of reminding Israel that God’s words and promises are true and will come to pass. It is certain that God will do what He says He will do.
For ancient Israel, God was their refuge and if they were attacked it was because God allowed it to happen. Nothing happens without God’s approval. Whether Job or us, no temptation is allowed without God’s say so. That is why God makes a way of escape for every temptation Satan offers. That is why God keeps him from temping you beyond your ability to resist. The Devil does not because he cannot make you do it!
Task for Today: Accept responsibility for your own actions. Don’t blame others, don’t blame God and don’t blame Satan. You are in charge of you. There is a trumpet blowing in your ear. Do you hear it? Turn to God for help and a way out. Who will deliver you from this bondage? The answer is Jesus, the Son of God.
