Ezekiel 10:18 “Then the glory of the LORD went out from the threshold of the house, and stood over the cherubim.”
This verse comes near the end of the chapter which describes the Glory of the LORD leaving the temple. It is a sad day for the people of Israel and Judah, especially Judah. What use is a temple without the presence of God? That was the whole reason for building the temple to begin with. David and Solomon decided God needed a permanent home so they planned a temple to move Him out of the tabernacle or temporary dwelling place. They failed to ask God if He wanted a permanent home. He didn’t and when the time came that He could no longer dwell with His people because of their rebellion and disobedience He left the temple. He has not returned to an earthly building other than the hearts of His people. The only temple God recognizes is the one inside the Christian.
True, the LORD is in His holy temple, but the temple is not located in Jerusalem nor shall it ever be. For those who wait on its rebuilding, they wait in vain. The new temple will not be on this earth nor will it be in an earthly ‘holy city.’ There will be a new world and God will dwell in it and God Himself will be its temple. Revelation 21:22, “And I saw no temple in the city, for its temple is the Lord God the Almighty and the Lamb.” Why would God want a temple on earth when He is a temple Himself? Any reference to a future temple in Jerusalem is to the New Jerusalem which is a part of a new heaven and earth not the old one. This is the reason God had Moses build a temporary building for Him and never authorized the building of a permanent one.
Steven, in his famous speech makes this clear. We read from Acts 7: 48-51. “Yet the Most High does not dwell in houses made by hands, as the prophet says, ‘Heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool. What kind of house will you build for me, says the Lord, or what is the place of my rest? Did not my hand make all these things?’ You stiff-necked people, uncircumcised in heart and ears, you always resist the Holy Spirit. As your fathers did, so do you”
Does this sound like God will rebuild a temple in Jerusalem? He did not desire and does not desire a temple of stone. His hands made those things, they are of the creation not of the creator. If people insists on rebuilding the temple on earth they will be resisting the Holy Spirit and they will do so without the Ark of the Covenant which is essential to the temple. The Ark of the Covenant is in heaven.
Task for Today. You are a temple of God if you are a new creature, a born again spiritual being. You and all the rest who are a temple of God will be transferred at the last day to heaven where you will be a lively stone (not created stone) in the temple of God. As Jesus dwells in us so we dwell in him. So conduct yourself that you do not disgrace the temple of Jesus. God will not stay in such a temple. Live holy lives is a purposeful statement.
