Jeremiah 22:8, 9 “‘And many nations will pass by this city, and every man will say to his neighbor, “Why has the LORD dealt thus with this great city?” And they will answer, “Because they have forsaken the covenant of the LORD their God and worshiped other gods and served them.”’”
Once the people entered the Promised Land, they had an important decision to make. They could choose evil as their forefathers did, or they could choose the good they were being blessed with. Joshua, who led them into the land that flowed with milk and honey, pointed that out to them. He said in Joshua 24:14, 15, “Now, therefore, fear the LORD and serve him in sincerity and in faithfulness. Put away the gods that your fathers served beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve the LORD. And if it is evil in your eyes to serve the LORD, choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your fathers served in the region beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.”
Now, hundreds of years later, Jeremiah is discussing the same choice. The people of the Promised Land, descendants of those led by Joshua, were again faced with choosing whom to serve. They learned nothing from history. The people of Jerusalem have a great sin that has led to their destruction. That sin is seen in three distinct acts which they did. First, they broke covenant with God. Second, they worshiped false gods. Third, they obeyed false gods. God had warned them, but they paid no heed to His warning. Over and over again, they paid the price for disobedience.
Task for Today: God still warns against breaking His covenant and worshiping other gods. This is a good day to choose whom you will serve. You will serve whom or what you worship. Is it God the creator or some other thing? Who do you serve? Where is your time spent? Where does your money go? What is your major interest? Some soul searching is in order, is it not? You can fool others and yourself but not God. Today give your idols up and worship God only.
