“Therefore do not throw away your confidence, which has a great reward.”
He reminds them of what they have already come through as soldiers of the cross with the encouragement to not give that up. And why should they hold on to their confidence? Because the route they have chosen has a great reward. This is in contrast to the old way, which provided little in the way of reward and inspired little confidence.
To go back under the law would be a foolish thing to do our writer tells them. They would lose all they had gained and would gain nothing in return. Even today, people resist change. We hear a lot of conversation about the ‘old way’ and the good old days, and there seems to be this desire to return to them rather than accept the new even if the new is better.
Task for Today: Don’t turn back to your former ways but embrace the new covenant of Jesus. It will bring you a great reward. Forget those things that are behind you and move forward to the great promises of God, which come through faithfulness to His Son.
