“And the Holy Spirit also bears witness to us, for after saying, ‘This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, declares the Lord: I will put my laws on their hearts, and write them on their minds…’”
Verse 17 will finish the thought of what will result in the actions of this verse. These two verses share the activity of God in bringing about the new covenant and also tell us how this covenant will be shared with the people of the covenant. Notice that the entire Godhead is involved in the establishment of the new covenant. The Holy Spirit brings the word, telling us what God intends. God is involved by moving in the inner man, changing minds and hearts. Jesus is involved as He becomes the donor of the blood to make the covenant unbreakable.
Paul, in his letters, made frequent reference to the law written on stone and the one written on hearts. The law on stones was dead according to him, but the one written on hearts is very much alive. This is a covenant made by God and not by man. As humans, we have no say in this covenant except to live by it or reject it. We make no provisions or conditions. Everything about the covenant is God made and ordained.
Task for Today: Accept the new covenant and live by it. Open up your heart and allow God to write the covenant there. Give Him your mind. Let Him direct your thoughts and steps. You’ll never get a better deal, believe me.
