Hebrews 8:6

“But as it is, Christ has obtained a ministry that is as much more excellent than the old as the covenant he mediates is better, since it is enacted on better promises.”

The writer keeps the betters coming. This time it is the promises upon which the better covenant is based. In this verse alone we have three betters. There is a better ministry, a better covenant, and better promises.

The ministry of Jesus is superior to any old testament figure regardless of how revered he was by the Jews. The work that Jesus does as covenant giver and as high priest is better than that of Moses or Aaron.

The new covenant mediated between God and men is far superior to that mediated by Moses. The Mosaical covenant, which included the Ten Commandments, was not permanent. It was written on stones and it failed to deliver everlasting forgiveness. It also was a barrier between Jews and non-Jews. The new covenant mediated by Jesus was permanent, written on living hearts and brought about the end of barriers between people and between God and people.

The new covenant was predicated upon the eternal promises of God, echoed again and again in the works of the prophets. It was also foretold by Moses who foresaw the coming of Jesus as the greatest prophet.

Task for Today: Thank God that you live in the days of the greatest covenant every given by God to His creation. Thank God that you are covered in the ministry of Jesus, can be saved by His blood and taken home to glory because of that ministry.
