“For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.”
Here is a verse that will be more familiar to us. No doubt you have been in a Bible class where it was discussed or listened to a sermon using it as a text. It is a powerful statement of God’s word. Usually, in these settings, the verse is applied to the written scriptures. That is not the writer’s main point; I don’t think. He is more than likely contemplating God’s spoken word. This is because God is, in essence, His word. They are the same thing. Therefore the word is living. It doesn’t go out and then end. It isn’t spoken and then forgotten. The word of God is not a dead language lying forgotten somewhere. When God speaks, His word like Him lives and penetrates to the core of things.
God’s word does what He intends it to do. When God speaks of saving the human race, His word will do just that. God, as the Word, took the form of flesh and came among humans in order to accomplish their salvation. That Word lives as well. The Holy Spirit took that word and put it into the hearts of God’s people. It penetrates to the deepest place in our being and confronts our sins. They (our sins) are open before Him. If we will obey that word, He will forgive those sins.
Task for Today: Remember that God can see into your deepest place. Nothing is secret to Him. With that in mind, remember that the word judges our thoughts and our intentions. Later the writer will say, “…whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.” (Hebrews 11:6) Since God looks deep, he knows if we believe or not. Love God with your entire heart.
