Chapter 1, Verse 25 “But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing.”
James uses ‘perfect law’ the same as he uses ‘word’ in verses 18, 21, and 22. The perfect law is in all respects the good news, the gospel of Jesus Christ. That perfect law of liberty in Christ requires perseverance. Not just perseverance in hearing but perseverance in doing. The gospel requires a response. The good news brings expectation of action on the part of the hearer. James then suggests certain examples of behavior that should follow the hearing. This is not a complete list by any means but he gives us enough to tell us what he has in mind.
A hearer who acts is not likely to forget what he has heard. Additionally, James makes the point that a hearer who does will find a blessing in his doing.
Task for Today: Look again at the perfect law of liberty. What does it provide for you? What does it require of you. Does obeying the gospel end when one is baptized? Jesus made that plain when He taught the disciples. What is your plan for today? Does it include doing something in the name of Jesus?
