Chapter 1, Verse 18 ^“Of his own will he brought us forth by the word of truth, that we should be a kind of first fruits of his creatures.”

Here is an example of good and perfect gifts; God gave us birth (brought us forth) through the word of truth. This is God’s choice and is generously given to all who will accept it. Our opportunity of a new birth is not of our doing but of God’s. He so loved the world that He provided the means of its salvation.

What is intended here? The birth of humanity, the birth of Israel, or the birth of Christians? I favor the third due to the use of the terms in the New Testament to describe the idea of first fruits. I think there is little doubt that ‘word of truth’ here represents the gospel message which is all about the new birth.

Task for Today: This is a moment to reflect on what God has done for me as an individual. He provided me the means to destroy my old self and take on a new one created in the spiritual image of His Son. Have you experienced the new birth? Are you a first fruit of the gospel? Have you surrendered to His will today? Now is the time. Come to Jesus for the new birth and a new life.
