Comments on James

Chapter 1, Verse 5 “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.”

Wisdom was highly exalted in Old Testament writings and set at the top of characteristics that one should desire in following the call of God. Perhaps there is a connection here with the preceding verses, for if we lack wisdom we will not see the advantage of receiving faith-tests with joy.

I have to confess that I did not learn to pray for wisdom as a child and I did not do a good job in teaching my children to pray for wisdom. Seems stupid now, since it’s one prayer that God is generous in answering in the affirmative. This is a prayer that follows the ask, then receive pattern.

It’s not too late to ask though, since wisdom is still needed in our lives and God gives it without reproach for our not having it or asking for it.

Task for Today: Don’t live another day without wisdom. No need to. Really, wise up. Ask God for wisdom and expect to get it. Solomon was wise to ask for wisdom since the ability to do things is small compared to knowing how and when to do them.
