Comments on Philippians

Chapter 4, Verse 18, 19 “I have received full payment, and more. I am well supplied, having received from Epaphroditus the gifts you sent, a fragrant offering, a sacrifice acceptable and pleasing to God. And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.”

Paul is explaining how servant-hood works among Christians. God has used the Philippians to supply Paul’s needs. Paul has received it graciously knowing that it is a gift from God via the Philippians. When we help someone we are doing God’s work. Whatever the cost it is a pleasing offer to God as well as the other person.

Paul knows that the Philippians will be blessed because of their generosity because that is how God works. Givers receive and what’s more they receive more than they give. Some use this idea to teach that givers will become rich because of their giving. If you think of spiritual riches that would be correct but if you think earthly wealth you totally misunderstand how God works. God does allow some to gain worldly wealth but not because it is payback. He gives riches so that the rich can give to others and woe if they build bigger barns.

Task for Today: Help everyone you can every time you can in the name of Jesus. God will take care of you. He will take care of your needs but not necessarily your wants. Think: “What I have from God is not for me, it is to bless others.”
