Two: Don’t quench the Spirit.

1 Thess. 5:19 “Do not quench the Spirit.”

Paul sees the Holy Spirit living within us as a fire to stir us up to do the godly works we were created for. If we listen to the Spirit and obey the Spirit, He will motivate us to walk in the steps of Jesus, molding us to do good deeds. The Spirit is a living flame to keep us on fire for the Lord, Jesus Christ.

Shutting down the Word will certainly quench the Spirit. If we do not listen, we will not hear. If we disobey the Word we cannot be sanctified by the Spirit. If we don’t hold fast to what is good we will deny the Spirit’s work and hinder His role as guide and leader in our Christian walk.

In order not to quench the Spirit we need to maintain a positive attitude, rejoicing in the work of Christ. We must pray continually, relying on the Holy Spirit to guide us as we pray. We must view what God is doing in us through the Spirit with thanksgiving for this wonderful gift.

Task for Today: Inventory time. Check out your personal response to the Holy Spirit within you. Are you listening to Him? Are you obeying His word? Are you walking in the light of the Spirit every day because if you aren’t you are surely putting out the fire within you. Don’t put out the Spirit’s fire.
