Comments on Philippians

Chapter 4, Verse 6 and 7 “…do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

Paul is not suggesting that the Christian neglect his or her responsibilities by taking a ‘what? me worry?’ attitude. Christians do not live in a make-believe world where nothing bad can ever happen but they do live in a real world where God is in control and has their best interest at heart. Not one thing can be changed, positive or negative, by anxiety. The Christian is inhabited by the Holy Spirit, the very presence of God.

Even if the Christian doesn’t know what to pray in a difficult situation, the Holy Spirit does and is there to help the child of God. How bold to be able to pray with thanksgiving. What a blessing to know that God is there to hear and act on our behalf. The Christian is on the winning side of the war with evil and there is nothing that evil can do to counter the blessed promises of God.

Focus on the promises and believe in the one who promises. When you can do, that you will know a peace that exceeds any storm or trouble that Satan can send your way. In Christ we have access to peace that is beyond the understanding of the non-believer. Jesus is the eye of the storm and in Him we are perfectly safe.

Task for Today: Are you overly concerned about something? Give it to the Holy Spirit. Ask for the peace He brings through your faith in Jesus. You can’t change the course of the storm, but Jesus can calm it into still water.
