The great English poet, William Wordsworth, wrote a sonnet arguing that it is. That we are so absorbed with things that we miss the beauty of the world around us. I will offer a couple of stanzas to help us get the feel of his dismay.

The world is too much with us; late and soon,

Getting and spending, we lay waste our powers;–

Little we see in nature that is ours;

We have given our hearts away, a sordid boon!

The Bible says we have everything needed for life and godliness (2 Peter 1:3) and yet we want more. Is the poet right? Have we wasted our powers searching for things we don’t need while neglecting the things that we do? Wordsworth said we gave our hearts away but it is much worse than that. By trading the things of the world for the things needed for life and godliness we have made a sordid choice indeed.

Peter says that those things the divine power has given us grant us precious and great promises. What in this world could be more important, more valuable, more desirable than the precious promises of God.

Task for Today: Stop the getting and spending. Stop wasting your powers. Stop giving your heart (soul) away. God’s divine power will give you all you need.
