Work of the Spirit
When you rise from the water of baptism, a new creation in Christ, you are born into a kind of warfare like you have never known. Peter says you have an adversary who is like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. The Devil and his angels immediately name you as an enemy who must be overcome. He, the Evil One, has great power and he will use every possible means to recapture you. You are not a warrior, but a babe in Christ. What can you do?
Not to worry! When you were recreated by Christ, He gave you the presence of the Holy Spirit of the Godhead. The Holy Spirit is a warrior and knows every trick of persuasion the Devil has at his disposal. How will the Holy Spirit fight for you? He will give you all the defensive tools you will need to win this war. We turn to Ephesians 6:10-17 for our answer.
“…be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil.” (Eph. 6:10-11)
Where does this armor come from and what is it? Paul writes this admonition to the Ephesians as if they already have the armor. Jesus sent the Holy Spirit to guide us and help us in our war against Satan. He furnishes all we need to stay free in Christ. Here is what He gives us (Eph. 6:13-17)
.Belt of truth. The Word of God, a product of the Spirit.
Breastplate of righteousness. Not our righteousness but that furnished by the Spirit.
Shoes of readiness. From the gospel of peace via the Spirit.
Shield of faith. One of the gifts of the Spirit.
Helmet of salvation. The Spirit is our seal of salvation.
Sword of Spirit. “Which is the word of God”
How does it work? Here is what Paul said, “…praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end, keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints…” (v. 18)
Task for Today. Don’t ever take the whole armor off. It requires perseverance and prayer. This armor coupled with prayer is a total defense package. If you do this thing, you will never fall and the devil will never be able to get to you.
