Chapter 3, Verse 9 “…and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith—”
Paul doubles down on separating his present following of Christ from his previous following of the law. He continues to promote the righteousness of faith over law righteousness. Evidently, the Jewish Christians who were advocating the need of certain law requirements had proven difficult to convince. Paul is a great teacher and writer. Look at how neatly he presents his point.
a. not having my own righteousness
b. that comes from the law
c. but that which is through faith in Christ
a. the righteousness
b. that comes from God
c. which is based on faith
Relying on circumcision was putting their confidence in the flesh. It created a false righteousness because it did not rely on God. Faith in Christ, circumcision of the heart, placed reliance on God because it used His righteousness. After centuries of relying on the law, and keeping the law, Jews found forsaking it for Christ alone very difficult. The coming of Jesus, as had been predicted by the prophets, changed everything. Now, Paul insists, salvation is by faith in the Messiah rather than the law that promised Him.
Task for Today: Do not be tempted by those who still try to impose some aspect of the law. No requirements are required of Christians but those imposed by Christ. We are no longer under the old covenant. Claim your righteousness today through faith in Christ, not by law or deeds of the law.
