Comments on Philippians

Chapter 2, Verse 25 “I have thought it necessary to send to you Epaphroditus my brother and fellow worker and fellow soldier, and your messenger and minister to my need,”

Epaphroditus had come to Paul from the Philippi church as the church’s messenger and gift bringer. He was sent as a helper for Paul on behalf of the Philippian church. We do not know what ministry Epaphroditus performed for Paul but it no doubt was one important to Paul.

During the course of his work with Paul, Epaphroditus had fallen ill. It had been a serious illness that brought him close to death. Paul gives God credit for saving Epaphroditus’ life and sparing Paul much sorrow. As one would expect, Epaphroditus was also homesick for his Christian family in Philippi.

We notice that Paul sets Epaphroditus apart with three characteristics. He was a brother in the Lord. He also was a worker along with Paul in sharing of the gospel. Paul was in chains and he sees Epaphroditus as a fellow soldier fighting against the Roman guard and the evil forces facing the gospel’s spread.

Task for Today: Perhaps we could set a goal today of modeling Epaphroditus. We can show ourselves to be true brothers to fellow Christians, sharing in their work. There is no doubt that we are engaged in a spiritual battle against Satan and his army. We can, like Epaphroditus put on the whole armor of God and carry God’s banner into the battle. Live the song, “Soldiers of Christ, Arise.”
