Comments on Philippians

Chapter 2, Verse 18 “Likewise you also should be glad and rejoice with me.”

If our understanding of the previous verse is the possible answer, then this verse becomes clear. The church should not mourn Paul’s imprisonment. He saw himself as being used by God and clearly wants the Philippians to have the same view. If he was being poured out like a drink offering, then he would rejoice in the sacrifice. Don’t cry, church, be happy that God is using me to further the gospel of Christ is Paul’s response to his time in jail.

Many men and women of faith have found encouragement and courage in Paul’s words and attitude. Imprisonment did not stop with Rome and Paul. Even today, in our own lifetime Christians are being held in bonds for their preaching of the cross. Whatever the Evil One does to harm the church God uses to make it strong. Ours is the song of victory in spite of personal harm or loss. We have read enough scripture to know that killing of prophets is nothing new.

Task for Today: Don’t be afraid of what men or governments can do to you. Do not allow the threats of evil stop you from preaching and teaching Christ crucified. And do not shrink back from sharing the gospel because of fear of rejection rather than prison. Every opportunity to share the good news is an opportunity to rejoice. Rejoice today.
