Chapter 2, Verse 17 “Even if I am to be poured out as a drink offering upon the sacrificial offering of your faith, I am glad and rejoice with you all.”
If I could say for certain what this verse was saying to the Philippians, I would instantly become a famous theologian. Read a dozen commentaries and get a dozen explanations. Paul seems to be referencing the Levitical priests’ role. They were to offer an animal sacrifice, then a grain one, followed by a drink offering. The drink offering was poured out into the sanctuary. Paul refers then to himself as the offering that is poured out. The question becomes, how is that a reflection of the Philippian faith?
The best solution, it seems to me is that Paul is not referring to his death which is the first thought that comes to mind since he seems certain in other places that he will not die in prison or at that time. Therefore, he could be referring to his imprisonment which was closely associated with the Philippians. He does seem determined that whatever occurs he will maintain his joy in the Lord and in his Philippian brethren.
Task for Today: You can certainly borrow Paul’s attitude about life as a Christian. You can find joy in service even if the service is with pain and suffering. Paul’s learned contentment is a challenge to us all. Jesus warned us that following Him might well lead to suffering and even death. Paul’s victory was in the resurrection of Jesus and ours can be as well. Grow your faith so that you can be “poured out” like Paul and still rejoice.
