Chapter 2, Verse 9 “Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name,”
What does ‘highly exalted him’ mean? Jesus returned to heaven to resume His place in the Godhead. First, he lowered Himself to take the form of a man. Then when He had accomplished His mission, God restored Him to His rightful place. This is exactly what Jesus had asked for in His prayer in John 17:5. Many people incorrectly think that Jesus is still a human and will return to earth as a human and set up a human government. Jesus was and now is God.
Peter spoke of this exaltation in his Pentecostal sermon in Acts 2:33. The Hebrew writer mentions it in Hebrews 1:3, “He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power,”. In verse 8, “But of the Son he says, ‘Your throne, O God, is forever and ever…”
There are two possible names referenced here: Jesus and Lord. The scholarly world is divided of course on which one Paul had in mine. I prefer Lord as the choice due to other references in the scriptures. Since this is a verse-by-verse blog rather than an exhaustive treatise, I won’t take space to make a thorough explanation of my choice. Lord is the same as Yahweh and denotes the exalted status of Jesus to the right hand of God. Verse 11 sheds some light on this interpretation as well. Jesus is to be confessed as Lord. See also Isaiah 45:23.
Task for Today: I encourage you to call on the name of the Lord. To say that Jesus is Lord is to recognize Him as a part of the Godhead. Be sure when you use the name Jesus, you use it with the understanding that He is Lord of all. He is the Lord of lords and the King of kings.
