Chapter 2, Verse 5 “Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus,”
Sometimes a different translation can shed light on a verse or words within a verse. The NIV does that for verse five. “Your attitude should be the same as Christ Jesus.” How were they to treat others? What was their humility to be like? In what ways might they look after the interest of others? Think and act like Jesus. In the early 1900’s, people popularized the idea of WWJD. It showed up on signs and bracelets. The letters came from the title of a book written in the late 1800’s by Charles Sheldon entitled, “In His Steps: What Would Jesus Do?”
Charles Sheldon’s title is a great exposition of this verse. Before we speak or before we act we would be wise to ask ourselves this question. Think for a moment about your own interactions with others. Are your words healing words? How do you react to the lame, the blind, and the hungry? What would Jesus say to the one who maligned Him. How would Jesus respond to the hungry child or the homeless man?
Task for Today: Sheldon’s book was a great challenge when it was published. If you haven’t read it, I suggest you do. Read it as a way to judge your own interactions with those who treat you wrongly or those who need your personal help.
