Chapter 2, Verse 3 “Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves.”
Paul gives the Philippians and Christians today a guide for their interactions within the fellowship. Before we say or act, what we are going to say or do must be put through the filter of why are we saying it or why are we doing it. Is our comment or action for self, or for others? How do we do this ‘others first’ lifestyle?
Easy, according to Paul. Just act within the framework of humility that says others are more important than self. Self-imposed humility is the order of the day for Christians. In the next few verses Paul will illustrate exactly what he means in his discussion of the life and death of Jesus. Jesus humbled himself. Men could not humble Him, but He did what was necessary. Paul tells the Philippians that they too must humble themselves. Others may elevate us in some form or fashion, but as children of the sacrificial lamb we should not accept the praises of men.
Task for Today: Do not think more of yourself than is honest, but lower yourself to the level of weak flesh that you truly are. Everyone sins. Every single one of us. Ask yourself the question, “Who am I?” (Psalm 8:4). Remind yourself that the only value you have is bestowed on you by God.
