Comments on Philippians

Verse 8 “For God is my witness, how I yearn for you all with the affection of Christ Jesus.”

Paul uses a mild form of an oath to impress how he feels toward the ones he is writing. It certainly adds to the reaction we naturally have to this introductory passage. Paul is very sincere and wants them to know that. No matter what comes next or if someone else says otherwise, Paul wants it clear that he loves this body of believers very much. Using an oath is not uncommon for Paul, especially when he wants to make his personal feelings known. God, of course, knows Paul’s heart.

Something about the Philippian church has been brought to Paul’s attention. He is concerned about it and seems to be going to great lengths to assure the church that he cares for all of them, regardless of their position in the discussion at large. Paul feels the personal love of Jesus in his life and repeatedly finds a way to share it with others. Perhaps his call on the affection of Jesus will also serve to remind them that Jesus loves them just as he loves Paul.

Task for Today: Remember today that Christ loves you. Remember that He loves all Christians and died for all. He will not take one side over another. But Paul’s example leaves us with little choice but to extend our affection to every Christian in every part of the world. Today, follow Hebrews 13:1 “Let brotherly love continue.”
